"The Nude Flume Ride at Six Flags Over Brighton" Although best known for his frustrated career as a theatrical designer, Bleak was also active in designing rides for the trendy theme parks that sprang up around Brighton and other watering places in the late 18th century. Like his dramatic work, his rides were rejected as inappropriate, especially this one, which celebrated Bleak's twin loves of swimming and nudism. He was unable to convince the developer that "Shooting the Pipeline" was a wholesome pastime for consenting adults and so the ride remained an unbuilt dream, as did so many of his public works proposals, most notably the Greater London Drive-Through Sperm Bank. |
